What do you actually need in a visual identity?
A visual identity should make ordinary work easier. You should be able to open Canva on Tuesday morning and know which typeface, colours, image style and layout to use without beginning a small identity crisis. You probably don’t need an eighty-page brand book or seventeen decorative logo versions. You need a look that feels like you, works in the places your clients actually meet you and is simple enough to keep using after the designer leaves.

The Tuesday-morning test: can you use it without the designer?
A good visual identity shouldn’t give you more rules to worry about. It should remove decisions, make the next thing easier to create and help the business look like itself wherever it appears.
